Application Note

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL 6) Upgrade and Your ASTi System (#121)

ASTi is in the process of transitioning Telestra to RHEL 6, while ASTi’s Voisus product transition to RHEL 6 is already complete. This application note discusses questions related to RHEL 5-based operating system (OS) versions of Telestra and Voisus systems (i.e., Telestra systems running 4.XX version software and Voisus systems running 5.24 version software or earlier).

For more information about how this development affects you and your program, see the Telestra RHEL 6 Upgrade and Voisus RHEL 6 Upgrade FAQs below:

Telestra RHEL 6 Upgrade

What is ASTi's current production standard for Telestra software?

Unless otherwise requested, Telestra’s current production standard is RHEL 5.

Why has the production standard not yet transitioned to RHEL 6?

The RHEL 5-based OS is part of the approved Telestra Department of Defense (DoD) Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Process (DIACAP) Authorization to Operate (ATO) enclave. This accreditation is important and in many cases necessary for our customers. As a result, ASTi has remained on RHEL 5 until customer and government requirements and transition support to RHEL 6 are finalized.

In January 2017, ASTi will transition Telestra to RHEL 6.XX. This transition will use the DIACAP Information assurance Posture Assessment Checklist (IPAC) process in order to maintain system ATO accreditation.

What happens when the Telestra DIACAP ATO expires in February 2018?

Even though this expiration will not occur for some time, ASTi has already begun the Bridge ATO & Risk Management Framework (RMF) ATO process. For additional information, contact support@asti-usa.com.

Can I get a RHEL 6 version of Telestra today?

Sure, we thought you would never ask! Until ASTi transitions the Telestra production standard to RHEL 6, customers may request a RHEL 6 version of Telestra when ordering a new system or upgrading a current RHEL 5-based OS.

What will the Telestra RHEL 6 upgrade cost?

If you are purchasing a new system, RHEL 6 is provided at no additional cost. Just request the RHEL 6-based OS on the purchase order, and you are all set. If your system is over six months old, upgrading from RHEL 5 to RHEL 6 requires a one-time fee per system. For pricing information, contact sales@asti-usa.com.

Note: If you have purchased the Information Assurance (IA) maintenance option for your system, you will automatically receive the update when it becomes available. However, the one-time IA Package option (SEC-TEL-0X, not the maintenance program) does not cover the Telestra RHEL 6 upgrade.

What’s the risk of updating my Telestra system to RHEL 6?

Updating to RHEL 6 includes Telestra software updates as well. However, the risk for having any operational issues with your Telestra system as a result of the update is low. The current 6.1 RHEL 6 Telestra software release is nearly identical to the 4.48 RHEL 5 software release. In addition, ASTi has prepared internal tests, procedures, and quality assurance plans for this upgrade.

However, additional testing may be needed if you are updating from a much older release (e.g., version 4.23 or earlier) or you have used custom install scripts, non-ASTi supported OS modifications, etc. Please advise ASTi of your existing software version with your request for upgrade.

Will ASTi still support a RHEL 5 version of Telestra?

Yes, ASTi can still deliver and support existing RHEL 5 based software releases after the Telestra production standard transitions to RHEL 6 in January 2017. However, feature changes and enhancements will be limited and may incur additional costs once the transition occurs. To discuss changes to a Telestra RHEL 5 version software release from 2017 onwards, contact ASTi at support@asti-usa.com. Also note that Red Hat plans to cease production of RHEL 5 in 2017 and move to a limited support model. For more information, see www.redhat.com.

When will ASTi upgrade Telestra to RHEL 7?

ASTi’s current production plan is to release a RHEL 7 version of Telestra in 2018.

If RHEL 7 is an immediate and/or necessary program requirement, please contact ASTi at support@asti-usa.com to discuss.

Voisus RHEL 6 Upgrade

What is ASTi's current production standard for Voisus software?

Voisus' current production standard is RHEL 6. The RHEL 6-based OS is part of the approved Voisus DIACAP ATO enclave.

Note: ASTi transitioned Voisus to RHEL 6 with version 5.25; as a result, versions 5.25 and higher do not need an upgrade.

What happens when the Voisus DIACAP ATO expires in February 2018?

Even though this expiration will not occur for some time, ASTi has already begun the Bridge ATO and RMF ATO process. For additional information, contact support@asti-usa.com.

What will the Voisus RHEL 6 upgrade cost?

If you are purchasing a new system or your current system is version 5.25 or later, you are already running RHEL 6. If your system is running 5.24 or earlier, an upgrade from RHEL 5 to RHEL 6 requires a one-time fee per system. For pricing information, contact sales@asti-usa.com.

How does the Voisus RHEL 6 upgrade affect IA Maintenance?

The available ASTi IA options for RHEL 5 and RHEL 6 are identical. For more information on IA, see ASTi’s Information and Assurance Security page.

What’s the risk of updating my Voisus system to RHEL 6?

Updating to RHEL 6 also includes Voisus software updates. However, the risk of having any operational issues with your Voisus system as a result of the update is low. The current 5.27 RHEL 6 Telestra software release is nearly identical to the 5.24 RHEL 5 software release. In addition, ASTi has prepared internal tests, procedures, and quality assurance plans for this upgrade. Additional testing may be needed, however, if you are updating from a much older release (e.g., version 5.16) or you have used custom install scripts, non-ASTi supported OS modifications, etc. Please advise ASTi of your existing software version with your request for an upgrade.

Will ASTi still support a RHEL 5 version of Voisus?

Yes, ASTi can still deliver and support existing RHEL 5-based release versions if needed. However, feature changes and enhancements will be limited and likely incur additional costs. To discuss changes to a Voisus RHEL 5 version software release, contact ASTi at support@asti-usa.com. Also note that Red Hat plans to cease production of RHEL 5 in 2017 and move to a limited support model. For more information, see www.redhat.com.

When will ASTi upgrade Voisus to RHEL 7?

ASTi’s current production plan is to release a RHEL 7 version of Voisus in 2018.

If RHEL 7 is an immediate and/or necessary program requirement, please contact ASTi at support@asti-usa.com to discuss further.
